The journey began in 2009 when Tirzo and Reyna took a leap of faith and purchased a small Hispanic market in Elkin.

The early days were anything but easy. They invested everything they had into the business, selling personal belongings, emptying savings accounts, cashing out retirement funds, and taking on debt to keep their dream alive. Their goal was simple: provide quality products and serve a growing community.

After relocating to a larger space on North Bridge Street, they expanded into a meat market and grocery store. Inventory was modest, resources were limited, and growth came slowly. Between customers, the family would sit behind the register waiting for the next person to walk through the door.

Still, they kept showing up.

Every day brought new challenges, but it also brought new opportunities to build something meaningful.

The Story Behind the Name

While many people know The Mango Peel for its food, fewer know the story behind its unique name.

The inspiration comes from Tirzo's childhood home in Jalpa, Zacatecas, Mexico, where a large mango tree stood at the center of family gatherings. Friends and relatives would spend hours beneath its shade, talking, laughing, and sharing freshly picked mangos. As the fruit was eaten, the peels would collect in the middle of the group—a simple reminder that everyone had chosen to stay together a little longer.

Years later, that memory remained with Tirzo.

When it came time to name the restaurant, he wanted something that represented family, belonging, and community. The Mango Peel became a tribute to those gatherings and the feeling they created.

Today, that same spirit can be felt inside the restaurant's walls.

A Community That Showed Up

Like many small businesses, The Mango Peel faced one of its greatest challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic.

As restaurants across the country struggled to survive, the Elkin community stepped up in a remarkable way. Customers continued ordering takeout, supporting the business, and encouraging the family through an uncertain time.

That support left a lasting impression.
