September is the perfect time to get outside in Elkin. The heat's backed off, the bugs are ~mostly~ gone, and the trails are calling. We've got the views, the fresh air, and the post hike snacks. Elkin has some seriously great spots to explore this time of year.

Elkin & Alleghany Rail Trail

Trailhead: Elkin Municipal Park
Distance: ~2 miles one way (easy, flat terrain)
This peaceful greenway hugs the Big Elkin Creek and offers a flat, shaded route that's perfect for a casual stroll, morning jog, or family bike ride. Benches and bridges dot the path, and the early fall colors reflecting in the water give it that cozy, postcard feel. Don't even get us started on the waterfall that you encounter quickly after starting the trail.
Bonus: Start or end your walk with a picnic in Elkin Municipal Park, or stop by the playground if you've got the kids in tow.
Stone Mountain State Park
Trailhead: ~20 - 25 minute drive from downtown Elkin
Our Favorite Trail: Stone Mountain Loop Trail
Distance: 4.5 miles (moderate to strenuous)

If you're craving a bigger adventure, make the short drive to Stone Mountain State Park. The 4.5-mile Loop Trail takes you past a stunning waterfall, through a dense forest, and up to breathtaking views of the iconic granite dome. September brings cooler temps that make the uphill climb a bit easier, and way more rewarding.
Not feeling the 4.5 mile journey? Head to the Walk-up trail. It's the shortest and most direct. This 1.3 mile trail takes you directly to the summit of Stone Mountain for panoramic views.
Grassy Creek Vineyard Trails

Trailhead: Grassy Creek Vineyards & Winery
Distance: ~ 2 miles of connected trails (easy to moderate)
These wooded trails wind through the forest and vineyard land, offering a scenic and peaceful experience with just the right mix of nature and rustic charm. The best part? Your hike can end or begin with the tasting room. We call that balance.
Pro Tip: Check winery hours in advance and treat yourself to a glass of something seasonal on the patio after your hike.
Mountains-to-Sea Trail (MST) Access from Elkin
Trailhead: Various - start near Main Street Bridge or Elkin Municipal Park
Distance: Choose-your-own-adventure (easy stroll to strenuous hike)

Elkin is one of the few North Carolina towns where the Mountains-to-Sea trail runs right through downtown. Choose from quick nature walks or full-day hikes. You can hop on the MST at several points and find yourself immersed in lush forest, crossing bridges, or meandering along the Yadkin River. Keep your eyes peeled for white circle blazes marking the path!
Carter Falls Trail

Trailhead: Pleasant Ridge Road near Byrd's Branch Campground
Distance: ~0.6 miles roundtrip (easy to moderate)
Short, sweet, and full of wow factor. Carter Falls is definitely one of Elkin's hidden gems. A quick hike through the woods leads to a beautiful waterfall surrounded by rock outcroppings and early hints of fall color. It's the perfect after-work or weekend morning hike.
Trail Season is Calling
Elkin's trail system is one of its greatest treasures, especially in the fall. September gives you the best of both worlds. You get the warmth of late summer and the first whispers of autumn in the air.
Lace up your boots, fill your water bottle, and hit the trails. Your next favorite fall view is waiting.
