Explore Elkin’s Best Hiking Trails
Elkin is home to a variety of trails that cater to hikers of all skill levels. Here are some must-visit spots:
Carter Falls Trail - Discover this 0.8-mile out-and-back trail near Elkin, North Carolina. Generally considered an easy route, it takes an average of 21 min to complete. This is a popular trail for hiking, but you can still enjoy some solitude during quieter times of day. It's an easy to access trail with a beautiful waterfall just a few minutes away from the trailhead. Grassy Creek Vineyard and Trail- Enjoy a leisurely hike that combines beautiful scenery with the allure of vineyards. This trail is a favorite for those looking to blend outdoor activity with a taste of local wines. Many folks like to park at Grassy Creek Vineyard & Winery and hike from the winery through the campground to access the aforementioned Carter Falls Trail. As you walk along this trail you'll even come across an amazing dam mural by renowned artist Eva Crawford. Nothing like enjoying a glass of wine after a leisurely stroll to the waterfalls accompanied by an expansive art feature!
Forest Bathing Trail at Grassy Creek - North Carolina's first "forest bathing" trail is located on the estate of Grassy Creek Vineyard & Winery. It is officially named the Klondike Lake Trail. This one-mile trail (roundtrip) adheres to the Japanese concept of forest bathing, or shinrin-yoku, which means therapy in nature. The intention behind this trail is to get people to unwind and reconnect with the outdoors. Research shows that simply walking in nature and soaking in the atmosphere has many health benefits. It can relieve stress, enhance mood, revitalize and help people disconnect from today’s hectic pace.
Yadkin Valley Rail Trail- For a more accessible option, the Yadkin Valley Rail Trail provides a flat, scenic route perfect for walking, jogging, or biking. This 5.5-mile trail runs alongside the Yadkin River, offering peaceful river views and opportunities for wildlife spotting. Constructed along the bed of the old Elkin & Alleghany Railroad, this rails-to-trails project is a popular walking path in Elkin.The trailhead is located at Elkin Municipal Park. The trail heads northwest along Big Elkin Creek and is about two miles in length (one way).
