Foothills Art Center

A nonprofit arts organization, the Foothills Art Center works to accomplish the goal of reviving and maintaining a love for art within the community. Through art exhibitions, art classes and workshops for all ages, crafting classes, and community events, they absolutely accomplish this goal.

When signing up for classes at the Foothills Art Center, one has a lot of options! The Reeves Downtown School of music, the After School Art Program, and The Yadkin Valley Fiber Center are all lesson facilities that are a part of the Foothills Art Center. The Yadkin Valley Fiber Center is run by Leslie Fesperman and offers beginner to advanced weaving courses. Please check with these facilities regarding COVID restrictions with these classes.

The Foothills Art Center also recently moved its facilities into the Historic Gilvin Roth YMCA at Chatham Mill. The process of transforming this building into an arts facility is tedious, and some classes are currently suspended as they are creating new classroom spaces. To support the FAC in their move, and to support the arts in the community, visit www.foothillsarts.org and select “contribute now” to donate.

Downtown Outdoor Art

An indoor facility is not a requirement for enjoying the artistic side of Elkin. A project beginning in 2012, murals have been taking over the sides of buildings throughout the downtown area. The majority of these murals have been painted by Micheal Brown. Zara Petrocy, an Elkin High School graduate, has also painted a mural for her senior project. This mural is behind ONE by Prism on West Main Street.

On top of recent murals, historic ghost murals can be spotted throughout town, both inside and outside of buildings. These murals were painted in the 1900s, and are still intact today. Many of these murals were advertisements for businesses in existence back in the 1930s.

No matter how you choose to appreciate the arts in Elkin, you will surely not be disappointed in all the town has to offer. Be sure to contact the sites for more information regarding hours and COVID restrictions.
