Rooted in Home
Some people find their way to Elkin. Others never really leave. For Diana Cheek, it has always been home.

“I was actually born and raised in Elkin, so it has always been home to me,” she shares. After time away for college and living in a bigger city, she realized just how special it is. “I felt drawn back not only to the sense of belonging, slower pace, and genuine people, but also to rediscover my purpose and where I was meant to be.”
It’s here that she built her life, met her husband, started her real estate career, and chose to raise her children close to their grandparents, rooted in the same community that shaped her.
Growing Up Elkin
Her favorite memories are simple and familiar, the kind that define small-town life.
“My favorite memories will always be of my childhood and walking downtown from school and living on the same street as my best friends my whole life,” she says.
Now, she hopes her children will have those same experiences and grow up with the same love for Elkin.

A Community That Feels Like Family
Elkin, to Diana, is more than a place. It’s a network of connection.
“Elkin truly feels like family,” she says. “I love that I can meet someone new, and the conversation flows so naturally that before long we’re making connections through people and places we both know.”
That sense of connection is also tied to her family’s legacy. “Being able to say I’m Diana from the old Diana’s Bookstore and seeing that recognition—because of my mom—means so much to me. I’m incredibly proud to be her daughter and to carry on even a small part of the love and impact she had on this community.”
The Best of Both Worlds
For Diana, one of Elkin’s greatest strengths is its balance.
“I absolutely love the walkability and ease of access to everything,” she shares. “I also love knowing that if I want a weekend trip out of town then I can drive to the mountains or the beach in one tank of gas.”
It’s a place that feels both grounded and connected, offering a little bit of everything.
Places That Hold Meaning
Some places in Elkin carry stories that go far beyond their storefronts.
“I will always carry a deep love for Diana’s Bookstore,” she says. “The memories people still share about it are one of my favorite things to hear.”
The Reeves Theater is another meaningful place. “My mom helped begin restoration efforts there years ago, and it’s been incredibly meaningful to watch what it has grown into today. I love the people who care for it now and the wonderful things they continue to bring to our community.”
In One Word
If she had to describe Elkin in one word:
“Cozy.”
A place that feels like home, no matter how far you go.
