There’s something about the way Chance talks about Elkin that makes you lean in a little closer. Not because it’s loud or flashy. But because it’s rooted.
Finding Home
Chance didn’t grow up in Elkin.
But as he tells it, this is the place he and his family were always walking toward, even before they knew its name.
“It felt less like moving somewhere new and more like arriving,” he says. “Like we had finally stepped into the version of home we’d imagined for years.”
For Chance, Elkin didn’t just offer a new address. It offered belonging. The kind that settles in quietly and stays.
The Moments That Matter
Some of his favorite memories aren’t big or dramatic. They’re simple.
Walking downtown with his family as the sun sets behind the old brick buildings. Helping set up for festivals. Working long days at events alongside his mom’s business and watching the streets slowly fill with people.
One memory, though, stands out.
When his family hosted a large Christmas party for farmers and market vendors, the room filled with laughter, food, and stories. It felt like more than a celebration. It felt like gratitude made visible. Like roots intertwining.
Those are the moments that turn a town into home.
A Community That Shows Up
Ask Chance to describe the sense of community here, and he doesn’t hesitate.
“Strong. Steady. Generous.”
He speaks especially highly of the farmers market community. To him, it’s not just about selling side by side. It’s about showing up for one another. There’s a quiet loyalty among vendors, a shared understanding that if one grows, they all grow.
“It’s not competitive. It’s collaborative,” he says. “And that kind of spirit is rare.”
Past and Possibility
What makes Elkin unique to Chance is its balance.
The old mill buildings. The brick storefronts. The farmland just beyond downtown. History is everywhere. But so is momentum.
Artists. Farmers. Entrepreneurs. Dreamers.
“There’s a spark in this town,” he says. “Not loud. Not flashy. But steady.”
He believes something is waking up here. And he’s grateful to be part of it.
Building Something Here
In Chance’s eyes, Elkin is a place where you can build something real.
“Your voice isn’t lost in the noise,” he says. “If you have a dream, whether it’s opening a store, growing food, creating art, there’s room for it.”
And more importantly, people will notice. They’ll support it.
That belief is personal.
Tin Lenny’s holds a special place in his heart. It’s his mom’s dream brought to life, a space rooted in healing and community. Watching her build something from the ground up has shaped how he sees both Elkin and possibility.
He also feels deeply connected to Super Hero Watches. The owners are close friends, and his studio shares space with them. He’s spent countless hours painting murals for their store, layering color onto brick and bringing walls to life.
Now, he’s preparing to begin multiple new murals downtown. The first will be on the Greenwood building, just steps from Tin Lenny’s.
“I guess you could say I’m literally painting the town,” he laughs.
To Chance, there’s something powerful about leaving color on brick that’s been standing for decades. It feels like adding a new chapter to an old story.
Showing Up
When asked what makes Elkin vibrant, his answer is simple.
“It’s participation.”
A town doesn’t become vibrant by accident. It becomes vibrant because people decide to care. They volunteer. They create. They invest their time and heart.
And when someone needs help, Elkin responds. Quickly. Wholeheartedly.
When there’s something to celebrate, the town celebrates just as fully.
“That’s the difference,” he says.
One Word
If he had to describe Elkin in one word?
Becoming.
Not finished. Not fixed. Not frozen in time.
Becoming.
And Chance is proud to be building, painting, and dreaming right alongside it.
