Faces of Elkin: Caroline Altemueller

For Caroline Altemueller, Elkin has always been more than the place she lives. It is the place that raised her, shaped her and ultimately called her home.

Caroline moved to Elkin with her family in 2007 when she was five years old after her father became the owner of the local State Farm agency. Her parents were looking for a small town where they could raise their family, be closer to relatives and give their children the opportunity to attend Elkin City Schools.

What began as a move to a new town soon became something much more.

“The best way I can describe it is: home,” Caroline says. “No matter if you just moved here, moved here 20 years ago or have lived here your whole life, this community makes it feel like home.”

Growing Up in Elkin

Caroline grew up within the Elkin City Schools system, attending elementary, middle and high school here. Along the way, the people around her became an important part of her own story.

“In many ways, the people of Elkin helped raise me,” she says. “From the people I grew up around at church, to my teachers at school, to the neighbors and community members who have always been there, I have been surrounded by people who cared about me and wanted to see me succeed.”

Some of her favorite memories are rooted in the traditions that continue to bring the community together today.

Friday night football games have remained particularly special. Caroline first experienced Friday night lights as a student and now gets to experience them from a new perspective as a teacher.

“There is something special about being under those lights, surrounded by people you grew up with, cheering on your community,” she says. “Getting to experience that from both perspectives has made it even more meaningful.”

Another longtime favorite is the Yadkin Valley Pumpkin Festival. Caroline has both attended and worked the festival over the years and says it will always hold a special place in her heart.

“To see a community gather and make it happen rain or shine shows how special of a place and tradition this is.”

Coming Home

Even when Caroline left Elkin after high school, she always knew she wanted to return.

She and her husband, Matthew, both graduated from Elkin High School before attending the University of North Carolina Wilmington. After completing their degrees, there wasn't much question about where they wanted to begin the next chapter of their lives.

In 2023, the couple returned to Elkin, got married and began their careers in the community they had always considered home.

For Caroline, coming back also meant returning to a place that had played an especially important role in her life: Elkin City Schools.

Today, she teaches at Elkin Elementary School, bringing her story full circle from student to teacher.

“Elkin City Schools is my other home,” she says. “I have been a part of this system since Kindergarten, and I am blessed to work at Elkin Elementary School now.”

As she begins another school year, Caroline is now helping shape a new generation of Elkin students within the same community that helped shape her.

The People Make the Place

Ask Caroline what makes Elkin unique, and her answer isn't a particular attraction or destination. It's the people.

She has watched visitors discover Elkin through festivals, wineries, trails and weekend getaways, only to find something here that makes them want to stay.

“Elkin has so many things that draw people here, but nothing is greater than its people,” she says.

That sense of community is something Caroline has seen in everyday life as well as during difficult times. She remembers the way Elkin came together during the COVID-19 pandemic, from residents supporting local businesses to teachers delivering lunches to students who couldn't make it to school for a hot meal.

“It is that spirit that carries communities through when times are tough,” she says. “Elkin stepped up when it mattered.”

Caroline has also had a front-row seat to Elkin's growth over nearly two decades. She credits community involvement and collaboration among local organizations with helping revitalize downtown and establish Elkin as a destination.

“Having been in this community for nearly 20 years, it has been amazing to watch as these organizations and the people of Elkin have worked together to make this small town an even more special place to call home.”

A Place to Belong

For Caroline, the beauty of living in Elkin ultimately comes down to something simple: belonging.

“It is a community where people know you, support you, celebrate with you, and are there for you when you need them,” she says. “There is a genuine sense of belonging that is hard to find anywhere else.”

It's also the place where she met her husband, built countless memories and hopes to one day raise a family of her own.

“Elkin has a way of making you feel like you belong, and for me, it truly feels like home,” Caroline says. “There is nowhere else I would rather call home.”

When asked to describe Elkin in just one word, Caroline chose special.

It may be a simple word, she says, but for the town she calls “the best little town in NC,” it's the only one that feels right.

For someone whose journey has taken her from an Elkin Elementary student to an Elkin Elementary teacher, it's easy to understand why.
