For Megan Stainback, Elkin isn’t just a place on the map, “Elkin has always been home.” Born and raised here, she graduated from Elkin High School before heading off to college (Go Heels!) and building her career elsewhere. But in 2009, she and her husband, Kevin, returned with their two sons, drawn back by “the ease of living here, the mountains at our doorstep, and the endless opportunities to enjoy the outdoors.”

Megan’s happiest moments often involve exploring the local trails. “Whether it’s wandering in-town or heading to Stone Mountain, there’s always something new to see,” she says. She also has a soft spot for The Reeves Theater, where she works alongside a talented team, enjoying everything from the House Band to up-and-coming artists across a variety of genres. Pairing a concert with dinner at Harry’s, Mango Peel, or Side Door is her idea of a perfect night out.
When it comes to community, Megan describes Elkin as “a small town where people are friendly, helpful, and quick to step up.” Volunteer opportunities are plentiful, and residents share a commitment to creating a thriving town with strong schools and healthcare, good jobs, and plenty of recreation.

She’s especially proud of Elkin’s unmatched access to the outdoors. “Can you tell it’s my happy place?” she laughs, listing off Stone Mountain, the Blue Ridge Parkway, Doughton Park, and Kerr Scott Reservoir, all just minutes away. For her, Elkin offers “the perfect balance, big enough for great amenities, small enough that you’re greeted by name at the coffee shop.”
Several local organizations hold a special place in Megan’s heart:
The Reeves Theater, a historic 1941 landmark that brings live music and a sense of community to downtown. “It’s a true Elkin landmark, sharing the magic and joy of live music with everyone.”
Elkin Valley Trails Association, whose volunteers maintain and expand access to local trails, including the exciting Elkin Creek Headwaters project. “Their efforts make it possible for all of us to enjoy the beauty that surrounds Elkin.”
Reeves Downtown School of Music, where passionate musicians share their skills with students of all ages. “From intro-to-guitar, fiddle, and banjo classes to group jams, they share the love of music.”
For Megan, Elkin’s vibrancy comes from its people. “When the skills and passions of our residents come together, they create the vibrancy that makes Elkin such a special place to live.”
