There’s nothing quite like a good hike followed by a crisp, cold drink—and in Elkin, we've got that combination down to an art form.
Elkin makes it easy to relax, bask in the summer sunshine, enjoy some incredible trails, and sip on something refreshing along the way. With the unique blend of outdoor adventure and small-town charm, our favorite little NC town is the kind of place where hiking boots and hops can come together for a great time.
Hit the Trails
Elkin’s trail scene is something special. You don’t have to go far to find yourself surrounded by nature—many of our favorite treks are actually just a few steps from downtown.
Elkin & Alleghany Rail Trail
Just behind Elkin Municipal Park and a short walk from Main Street, the Elkin & Alleghany Rail Trail is a peaceful, mostly flat path that's perfect for walking, jogging, or biking. Following the old railroad bed, it winds through the woods with picnic spots, historic markets, and pops of pubic art along the way. Keep going past the first bridge and you'll find one of Elkin's hidden gems - a stunning waterfall that makes the extra steps worth it. With benches to rest on and quiet views to soak in, it's an easy favorite.
Overmountain Victory Trail
This peaceful, wooded trail traces the route of the Overmountain Men—patriot militia who marched to the Battle of King’s Mountain during the Revolutionary War. Starting at Elkin Municipal Park, the path winds west along the Yadkin River through forest and farmland, with signs that bring its history to life. At 5.9 miles out and back, it’s a gentle, scenic walk or ride with plenty of quiet corners to stop and take it all in.
Elkin Municipal Park Trails
Flat, shaded, and easy to navigate, the trails at Elkin Municipal Park are perfect for a casual stroll, jog, or family outing. You’ll find a paved loop, creek views, and picnic spots—plus it connects directly to the Elkin & Alleghany Rail Trail and marks the start of the Overmountain Victory Trail. Watch for markers along the way pointing to smaller side trails that loop you right back around.
Stone Mountain State Park
If you’re up for a bigger adventure, Stone Mountain State Park is just a short drive from Elkin - and beyond worth it. Towering granite domes, cascading waterfalls, and miles of rugged trails make it a hiker's dream. Hike to the summit for breathtaking views, or loop past the historic Hutchinson Homestead to get a glimpse of 19th-century life in the mountains. With hikes ranging from moderate to challenging, it’s a perfect spot to earn that post-hike pint.
Downtown Social Sips & Strolls

The best part? After your hike (or even instead of a hike—this is a judgement free zone), Elkin’s downtown has everything you need to relax, recharge, and raise a glass.
Start at The RailYard, Elkin’s laid-back outdoor beer garden that’s become a summertime staple. With open-air seating, frequent live music, and food trucks rolling through, it’s the kind of place you’ll want to linger. It's also part of Elkin’s Social District—which means you can grab a drink here and legally wander the charming downtown streets, beverage in hand.
Speaking of drinks, head to Angry Troll Brewing, Elkin’s hometown brewery and taproom. Located in a historic warehouse building, it’s the perfect spot to cool off with a house-brewed pint or try a flight of local favorites. Don’t miss the wood-fired pizza while you’re there.

And if you're craving something a little different, Fruition Cocktail Bar is just steps away. Known for its creativity, Fruition serves up small-batch cocktails and a constantly rotating selection of craft beers from across the country—making every visit a chance to discover something new.
The Perfect Summer Day in Elkin
What makes Elkin so special is how easily you can mix and match your perfect summer day. Take on a scenic trail, then wind down with live music, cold drinks, and a bite from one of our downtown restaurants or food trucks. Or skip the trail and just hop from spot to spot in the Social District—there’s no wrong way to enjoy it.
