There's something special about spending an entire day outdoors in Elkin.

From peaceful mornings on the trail to evenings spent listening to live music with a local glass of wine in hand, it's easy to fill an entire day with fresh air, great food, and unforgettable views. Whether you're visiting for the weekend or looking to experience your hometown in a new way, here's how to make the most of a day outside in Elkin.

7:30 AM | Start with Breakfast

Fuel up before your adventure with a hearty breakfast at Hunts Homestyle, a local favorite known for its home-style cooking and welcoming atmosphere.

Visiting on the weekend? Treat yourself to Sunday brunch at Southern on Main before heading out to explore.

8:30 AM | Hit the Trails

One of Elkin's greatest assets is its trail system. Within minutes of downtown, you'll find peaceful riverside paths, wooded hikes, and scenic overlooks that showcase the beauty of the Yadkin Valley.

Whether you choose the Elkin & Alleghany Rail Trail, the Carter Falls Trail, the trails at Elkin Municipal Park, or make the short drive to Stone Mountain State Park, there's a route for every skill level.

A huge thank you goes to the Elkin Valley Trails Association (EVTA), whose volunteers work year-round to build, maintain, and improve many of the trails that make outdoor recreation in Elkin possible. Their dedication helps keep our trails beautiful, safe, and ready to explore.

Don't forget your water bottle—and your camera.

11:30 AM | Slow Down by the Water

After your hike, spend some time along the Yadkin River.

If you're looking for a little more adventure, launch a kayak or paddleboard and explore the river at your own pace. Prefer to sit back and relax? Grab a tube and enjoy a leisurely float downstream. Floating the Yadkin is one of the best ways to experience Elkin, and it's easy to spend a few hours soaking in the scenery as the river carries you along.

If being on the water isn't your style, cast a fishing line, unpack a picnic, or simply find a shady spot along the riverbank and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. However you choose to spend your time, the river has a way of making you forget about the clock before heading back into town.

1:00 PM | Lunch Downtown

Downtown Elkin is full of locally owned restaurants where you can refuel before the afternoon's adventures. Grab some BBQ at Royall's Soda Shop, enjoy a burger at Elkin's oldest Bar & Restaurant, Harry's Place, pick up a Boars Head cold cut from Donna Kaye's Sandwich Shoppe and have a picnic, relax on the patio at The Barking Coyote Kitchen, enjoy a craft beer and lunch at Angry Troll Brewing, or settle in for a Southern-inspired meal at Southern on Main.

Whether you're looking for something quick or planning to linger over lunch, there's no shortage of delicious local options.

2:30 PM | Stroll Through Downtown

One of the best ways to experience Elkin is simply by wandering.

Pop into locally owned shops, browse the outdoor gear and gifts at River & Trails Emporium, and discover handcrafted treasures along the way. When you're ready for a sweet treat, stop by Creamy Dayz for a scoop of homemade ice cream before continuing your stroll through downtown.

As you explore, take time to admire the historic architecture, colorful storefronts, and welcoming atmosphere that give downtown Elkin its charm. You never know what hidden gem you'll find around the next corner.

4:30 PM | Make It a Vineyard Afternoon

After a full day outdoors, there's no better place to unwind than one of the Yadkin Valley's beautiful wineries.

Find a seat on the patio, order a wine tasting or your favorite glass, and soak in the mountain views. On many weekends, you'll also find live music that makes the experience even more memorable.

During the warmer months, Elkin comes alive with community events that are perfect for ending your outdoor adventure.

On the second Friday of each monthFood Truck Friday fills downtown with local food trucks, live music, and a fun community atmosphere. The Elkin Farmers Market brings fresh produce, handmade goods, and local vendors to Tuesday evening Night Markets and Saturday morning markets, making it easy to shop local throughout the week.
