Tricks, Treats & Small-Town Streets
October brings a different kind of charm to Elkin. Pumpkins start appearing on porches, skeletons find their way into storefronts, and downtown gets a little spookier as Halloween approaches.
Around here, celebrating the season is less about big scares and more about the fun of a small-town Halloween. Local businesses get creative with their decorations, seasonal treats start popping up around town, and by the end of the month, Main Street is filled with costumes and trick-or-treaters.
If you like your Halloween with a little hometown charm, you’ve come to the right place.

Halloween Takes Over Downtown
Take a walk through downtown Elkin in October and you'll quickly see that our local businesses aren't afraid to get into the Halloween spirit.
Storefront windows and sidewalks take on a spookier look as pumpkins, ghosts, skeletons and plenty of other characters begin appearing around town. Some decorations are cute, some are creepy, and others might make you stop for a second look.
It's worth taking a stroll through downtown just to see what everyone comes up with. Grab a coffee, browse the shops and keep an eye out for a few good Halloween photo ops along the way.
And don't assume all the fun disappears once the sun goes down. A few glowing jack-o'-lanterns and twinkling lights give downtown a whole different feel after dark.
Something Wickedly Creative
Halloween is a pretty good excuse to make something just for fun.
Throughout October, local studios and community organizations often add seasonal projects and activities to their calendars. Wildflower Art Studio is a great place to look for festive paint classes, while Two Creeks Pottery and Artsoffers another opportunity to get creative and make something of your own.
The Elkin Public Library also keeps its calendar full throughout the month, with programs for kids, teens and adults. Keep an eye on local event calendars as Halloween approaches for seasonal storytimes, crafts and other activities.
You might head home with a new piece of Halloween décor, a handmade keepsake or simply a good story about your artistic abilities.
Treat Yourself

Trick-or-treating isn't the only way to get something sweet around here.
October tends to bring seasonal flavors to coffee shops, restaurants, cafes and bars throughout Elkin. Think warm drinks on chilly mornings, fall-inspired desserts, creative cocktails and the occasional Halloween concoction that looks almost too spooky to drink.
Make an afternoon of it by grabbing a seasonal coffee before exploring downtown, stopping somewhere local for dinner and seeing what Halloween specials you can find afterward.
And if your idea of a Halloween treat leans more toward something you can carve, Hawks Produce is a good stop for pumpkins to take home and turn into jack-o'-lanterns.
A Little Spooky After Dark

There's something about a historic downtown after dark that feels especially fitting in October.
As the evenings get cooler and the sun starts setting earlier, make your way back through Main Street to see Elkin in a different light. Storefront decorations glow, the Reeves Theater marquee lights up Main Street, and restaurants and gathering spots offer plenty of places to settle in for the evening.
Check the local calendar before you head out, too. Live music, performances, seasonal gatherings and other events happen throughout the month, so you never know what might be waiting around the corner.
No haunted house required.
The Main Event: Trick or Treat Main Street

Then comes the night we've all been waiting for.
Trick or Treat Main Street is one of Elkin's favorite Halloween traditions, bringing families, local businesses and the community together for an evening of costumes, candy and plenty of fun downtown.
Main Street fills with superheroes, witches, princesses, monsters, movie characters and costumes that are a little harder to identify. Participating businesses and organizations hand out treats as families make their way through downtown, turning familiar streets into one big Halloween celebration.
It's the kind of event that feels especially at home in a small town. You'll probably run into someone you know, stop to admire more than a few costumes and leave with considerably more candy than you arrived with.
Come dressed for the occasion, bring your treat bag and be ready to make your way down Main Street.
Make a Night of It
Trick or Treat Main Street might be the main attraction, but there's no reason to head

home as soon as the candy bags are full.
Come downtown early for dinner at a local restaurant, browse the shops before trick-or-treating begins or stick around afterward to enjoy the evening. If you're celebrating without little ones in tow, check out what's happening at Elkin's restaurants, bars, breweries and live music venues.
And, of course, take some pictures. Between the costumes, decorated storefronts and historic downtown setting, Halloween in Elkin comes with plenty of opportunities for a good one.
Small Town, Spooky Spirit
Halloween doesn't have to be elaborate to be memorable.
Sometimes all you need is a costume, a bag full of candy, a few creatively decorated storefronts and a Main Street packed with neighbors enjoying the night together.
That's spooky season in Elkin: a little creepy, plenty festive and unmistakably small town.
We'll see you on Main Street.
